ABIM Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Credits

As of January 1, 2021, ABIM is no longer awarding MOC credit for passing the CBNC certification or recertification examination, or for passing the CBCCT certification examination.

In the past, CBCCT & CBNC Certification and Recertification examinations were accepted by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) for 20 points (each) in ABIM’s Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Individuals who passed a CBCCT or CBNC examination, and were enrolled in ABIM’s MOC program, could earn these MOC points. Please be advised that ABIM has changed its requirements for recognition of a MOC activity.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: What do I need to do to obtain these points?

A: You must be enrolled in the ABIM MOC program. You must pass a CBCCT or CBNC certification or recertification examination. You must provide us with your six-digit ABIM ID and we will submit the information to ABIM.

Q: Then what? Are the points awarded by CBCCT/CBNC or by ABIM?

A: The points are awarded by ABIM.  CBNC and CBCCT regularly provide ABIM with a list of individuals, identified by their ABIM ID, who passed a CBNC or CBCCT examination (once the scores have been released). ABIM provides the points within approximately 2 weeks of receiving the information.  It is for this reason that we need your six-digit ABIM ID.   Examinations passed prior to December 2013 are not eligible for these points.

Q: Where do I find my ABIM ID?

A: Log in to ABIM’s website, enroll in MOC and your ID will be on your status page. If you are enrolled but cannot find your ID, you can obtain your number through ABIM’s online help page.

Q: How do I provide my ABIM ID to CBNC or CBCCT?

A: Please log in to your CBNC or CBCCT account (preferred) and update your contact information, email CBNC@inteleos.org, CBCCT@inteleos.org, or fax: 301-424-0875 your ABIM certificate with your ID visibile on the bottom left corner.  You can also include your ABIM ID on your examination application in the ABIM ID field.

Q: Is there any cost to me from CBCCT or CBNC for this benefit?

A: No, there is not cost from CBCCT or CBNC beyond the regular exam application fee.

Q: Do I need to still take and pass ABIM’s examinations in the areas I am certified in?

A: Yes.  For additional information about ABIM’s MOC program requirements click here.
