CBCMR Certification Eligibility Requirements – Board Certification

Applicants must be physicians who, at the time of application, hold one of the following Board Certifications:

  • ​Cardiovascular Disease* – Board Certified in Cardiovascular Disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine, OR from an ABIM Cardiology subspecialty, OR in Cardiology from the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine OR the American Board of Pediatrics in cardiology ​​
  • ​Nuclear Medicine* (may carry additional requirements – see below) – Board Certified in Nuclear Medicine by the American Board of Nuclear Medicine OR the American Osteopathic Board of Nuclear Medicine
  • Radiology* – Board Certified in Radiology by the American Board of Radiology OR the American Osteopathic Board of Radiology
​​Physicians with Board Certification In Nuclear Medicine ​

In addition to the Documentation to Verify Board Certification below, all nuclear medicine physicians must also provide verification of their nuclear medicine board specialty type by completing and uploading the CBCMR Board Verification Attestation with their application. Applicants who hold, or will hold, Board Certification in Nuclear Medicine which was obtained through the Diagnostic Radiology training pathway may meet the Formal Training/Clinical Experience​ in Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR) Training Requirements.

Applicants who hold, or will hold, Board Certification in Nuclear Medicine NOT through the Diagnostic Radiology training pathway must also either provide documentation of 12 months of CMR spe​cific training OR that you meet the Clinical CMR Experience Pathway​.

Alternate Board Certification Pathway:
For candidates with extensive experience in cardiovascular magnetic resonance but not Board Certified in Cardiology, Nuclear Medicine or Radiology, please visit the Alternate Board Pathway.

Testamur Applicants – If you have not yet taken your Cardiology, Nuclear Medicine or Radiology Board you may apply to sit for the CBCMR examination in Testamur status provided that at the time of application:

1) you are in your Cardiology, Nuclear Medicine or Radiology training or

2) you completed your fellowship/residency training within 24 months of applying for the CBCMR examination

*CMR Training and Board Certification Outside the U.S. – If your Cardiology, Nuclear Medicine or Radiology training was completed outside the U.S., you are required to submit at least one of the following:

  • Evidence of certification from an equivalent medical specialty board in your country of practice accompanied by the name of the certifying organization
  • If you completed a formal training program, but your country does not have a board exam in your specialty, you must provide a letter of completion from your Cardiology, Nuclear Medicine or Radiology fellowship/residency program on institutional letterhead following CBCMR’s International Training Letter Template​.
  • Testamur Applicants – If you are currently in a Cardiology, Nuclear Medicine or Radiology training program, you are permitted to apply in Testamur status.

Testamur Conversion to Diplomate:
Upon successfully passing the CBCMR examination, Testamur Candidates will remain in this status until documentation of Board Certification in their specialty and current, unrestricted medical license is received by staff.   Conversion must take place within six years of passing the CBCMR examination.  Once this documentation is received, Testamurs will be granted Diplomate status with CBCMR and their names will be listed in the Directory of Certificants.  ​

Documentation to Verify Board Certification
Please upload one of the following documents to verify Board Certification:

  • ​A letter from the certifying Board verifying passing of the Board examination including the effective and expiration dates
  • A certificate from the certifying Board showing the effective and expiration (if applicable) dates
  • A print-out from the certifying Board’s website showing the effective and expiration (if applicable) dates
  • ​For non-U.S.-trained physicians, a copy of equivalent documentation verifying training credentials and/or national registration as a specialist in Cardiology, Nuclear Medicine or Radiology
